Now and Then, Griffin Inn, Hendreforgan

The Griffin Inn, originally the Griffin Hotel, Hendreforgan is an isolated former Rhymney Brewery pub that has been in the hands of the same family since 1961, shortly after the above photo was taken. Its remote location is due to the existence of an exploratory coal shaft close by, as well as the railway running through the valley, so the coal board applied for a license on a building they owned. Although the exterior has changed, the interior still has nineteenth century fittings and the pub is listed on the CAMRA Historic Pub Interior database

Now and Then, former Six Bells PH, Garndiffraith

The former Rhymney Brewery pub, the Six Bells, Harpers Road, Garndiffaith, Pontypool is now a private residence. The former railway line to Blaenavon runs to the right of the picture and Six Bells was the original name for the station, it changed to Garndiffaith in 1922.

Now and Then, former Railway Inn, Gilwern

The former Rhymney Brewery pub, The Railway Inn, Station Road, Gilwern, Monmouthshire is now a private residence called "The Old Railway Inn". The inn is situated above the village and the former Merthyr, Tredegar and Abergavenny railway ran to the right of the picture.

Now and Then, Cambrian Inn, Fishguard

The Cambrian Inn, Hamilton Street/Park Street, Fishguard was a Westerly outlet for the old Rhymney Brewery, today the pub serves Felinfoel according to WhatPub

Now and Then, former Royal Hotel, Clydach Vale

The former Royal Hotel, Court Street, corner of Fern Terrace, Clydach Vale. Another former Rhymney pub, demolished together with the adjoining house to widen the road going downhill. Odly the telephone poles appear to have remained in their same positions!

Now and Then, former Stanley Hotel, Tylorstown

The site of the former Stanley Hotel, Upper Terrace, Stanleytown, Tylorstown, Rhondda Valley. This former Ely Brewery, then Rhymney pub was demolished after a fire. The base of the left-hand column of the former doorway can be seen in the streetview image

Now and Then, Llynfi Arms Tonddu

The Llynfi, Maesteg Road, Tonddu is looking a lot better in Street View than it is when it was a Whitbread pub after they took over Rhymney Brewery. Now known as the Llynfi Arms

Now and Then, Usk Inn, Talybont-on-Usk

The Usk Hotel, Station Road, Talybont-on-Usk, Powys, a former Rhymney Brewery pub dates back to the 1840s and was built opposite the now long-gone train station. Now known as the Usk Inn.

Now and Then, former Royal Arms, Pantywaun

The former Royal Arms, Pant-y-Waun, Merthyr Tydfil. Not only has the pub disappeared but the entire village of Pant-y-waun has gone as well as the whole village became an open-cast mine, the Royal Arms Opencast in the 1960s, now filled in and the area landscaped with a new road cutting the site of the pub.

The Cresselly Arms pub, 31 Cardiff Road, Mountain Ash, CF45 4HA is still open as a pub, although according to What Pub the name has changed to The George post-2009

The former Cross Hands Hotel, The Square, Llanybydder, Teifi Valley as it was when it was owned by Rhymney Brewery and below in Street View, this Grade II listed building was closed and boarded up in 2011.
