Farewell to (Hereford) Arms

The Hereford Arms in Newport has finally closed for good and is awaiting conversion into flats. The popular pub, situated just off Chepstow Road in Maindee pulled its lasts pints last week and is now boarded up waiting for the inevitable fire to happen or for squatters to take hold . A great shame as this late-Victorian boozer was a popular pub and even had its own smoking solution in the yard at the rear.
The pub was originally owned by local brewers Phillip's and then by Courage and Ushers Brewery. County Estates owned it in recent years and then Alderbourne Limited. None of the recent owners seemed that interested in the pub and it was sold at an auction in London last year in a not-too-well publicised event, ie, ot at the usual pub auction or via one of the usual agents such as Sidney Phillips or Fleurets.
Another Newport pub closure!

That pub in Torchwood

From Brew Wales

Been having a lot of hits recently for 'Hereford Arms, Cardiff' and why? Well a pub called the Hereford Arms has featured in some scenes in the current series of Torchwood. It is of course the Hereford Arms in Maindee in Newport. Real ale handpumps can be seen in the clips of the show and Crouch Vale Brewers Gold, Fullers ESB and Gales HSB pumpclips have all been spotted on the pumps.

UPDATE
As everyone seems to be commenting about this pub I'll post another photo of it

Hereford Arms Newport

Looks like the recession may have saved the Hereford Arms in Newport. This very popular free house in the east of the city is able to sell beers from any brewery it chooses to and is under threat of closure and conversion to residential use. But a hard fought campaign by locals, CAMRA and an MP, though not the local incumbent has resulted in a stalemate situation where no one seems to the future of this succesful pub. Anyway tonights guest beer was Burton Bridge bitter and in the run up to christmas we have lots of Wye Valley coming on. Another pub not superpub I will be supporting. Oh and the above photo is of behind the bar with some of the breweries that have been supported here over the years.

Hereford Arms Update

It seems odd that the comapny that wants to close the Hereford Arms appears not to be trading itself. A quick check on Companies House website reveals that Alderbourne Limited are registered as a dormant company. Odd then that they seem to be trading by putting in a planning application for change of use as well as collecting the rent for the pub and others which they own. Perhaps Alaistar Darlings huge department of Customs and Inland Revenue would like to look into the accounts of Alderbourne and see if the company is really "dormant" or not?

Save the Hereford Arms!

One of the last back-street local pubs in Newport is set to be turned into flats. The popular Hereford Arms in Maindee, the only true free house in the area is under threat of closure. This friendly community pub is popular with bikers and offers 1 real ale from independent breweries such as Wye Valley, Brains and Freeminer. It also offers bottled real ales from other breweries such as Fullers. The pub also has traditional pub games such as Shove Ha'penny and a pool table. The company owning this pub now want this Victorian corner pub to be turned into flats. Help us save the pub by writing to Newport Council objecting to the closure.
