Pub closures and the smoking ban

There's a great piece over at Velvet Glove Iron Fist as the puritans get together to swap notes on how to denormalise drinking now that smokers have been banned from pubs.

According to Linda Bauld, the smoking ban had "no clear adverse impact on the hospitality industry". And above, using pub closure figures from the British Beer and Pub Association, we can see what "no clear adverse impact" looks like.

Also a good bit about the smoking ban and the rate of heart attacks in Britain.

On a related note, chef Anthony Worrall Thompson has launched an e-petition to call on the Government to reform the smoking ban. If you want to save the pub get over there and sign it now!

Its ban time again!

Over to the Daily Mail who have set themselves up to be used as the mouthpiece of fake charity Alcohol Concern.
'Alcohol companies accused of exploiting Facebook, Twitter and YouTube by 'targeting young people with drink campaigns'

So which alcohol companies are doing this?
Well none if you read the article, however the bansturbators and prohibitionists at fake charity Alcohol Concern are worried that kiddies may be attracted to drink via promotions on social media.
The charity Alcohol Concern claims drinks companies’ web pages ‘appeal to minors’ with games, competitions and videos of drink-fuelled parties.

It also criticised the use of online and ‘viral’ marketing. This is where a brand message from a company may be passed on by users of a network such as Twitter or through texting – and may eventually reach an under-age user.

Okay you can find just about anything you want online and I'm pretty sure these kids could have seen everything from the Anarchist's Cookbook to hard-core porn, yet the bansturbators want to prevent the legitimate use of the internet as an advertising tool by drinks companies.

An apologist for the fake charity Alcohol Concern is quoted as saying
'There’s a real danger of children and young people being exposed to alcohol marketing on such sites, particularly given that age verification mechanisms are largely ineffective'
The bansturbator is not mentioned but its probably Don Shenker or one of his acolytes. The problem is if you start banning alcohol on social media sites just because children may see it, where do you stop?
Banning pub signs and names over the doors in case the children may see it?
Banning alcohol from supermarket shelves in case a child may grasp it?
The problem is not with the advertising of alcohol but with fake charities such as Alcohol Concern and their bastard offspring Alcohol Concern Cymru being funded by the taxpayer to make attacks on an industry that is enjoyed by millions of people.
First they came for the smokers
Now they are coming for the drinkers

Welsh Brewer asks for Census Form in Welsh

A former brewer from Brains is asking to the fill out his census form in a native language of the United Kingdom but is being refused on cost grounds, Retired brewer Iain Turnbull, who is currently living on Stornoway on the Isle of Lewis has requested a census form in Welsh but the office responsible for the Census says he must fill in the form as it would be too expensive to use taxpayers’ cash for a form for Welsh speakers who live in Scotland. He can however have the form in Arabic, Gujarati, Klingon, Polish, Somali or any of the other commonly spoke languages of the UK but not Welsh.
Iain faces a fine of £1000 but is determined not to pay and merely wishes to fill in the census form in an indigenous language of the UK.
A previous article regarding Iain is here.

Cock and Bull in Stony Stratford

According to Wikipedia a 'Cock and Bull Story' is
  1. (idiomatic) A far-fetched and fanciful story or tale of highly dubious validity
and is believed to have originated from stage coachcoaching inns, travellers' gossip and rumour exchanged between two The Cock and The Bull in Stony Stratford, England. These inns were a main stopping point on the turnpike road from London to Birmingham , Chester and North Wales (for Ireland).

Stony Stratford is sited on the Old Watling Street, now the High Street and this road contains some fantastic old coaching inns which I once spent an afternoon researching some years ago.

However one Stony Stratford Councillor, Paul Bartlett, has decided to take it on himself to introduce a smoking ban in public places.

"Stony Stratford is a historic town which is blighted by cigarette butts," said Herr Bartlett.
"The plan that I am trying to put forward is for smoking to be banned in public in the High Street, surrounding streets, and preferably elsewhere as well."
"Why should people be able to smoke in my face and spoil the environment?," he added.

Yes that is correct, this health Nazi has invented his own Cock and Bull Story by wanting to ban smoking in public, not content with thousands of pubs being closed in this countrythis idiot is now proposing to ban a perfectly legal pastime form the streets of his town, though it is more of a surburb of Milton Keynes now.

Where to start with this authoritarian idiot? Well over at Dick's Place place a protest has been organised for this Saturday at the Vaults Bar, High Street, Stony Stratford, Buckinghamshire, MK11 1AQ.
There is a Facebook Group
A number of articles have been written about this:
Pro-street smoking rally in Stony Stratford - Joshua Lachkovic
For once I'm missing England - Angry Exile
On manoeuvres in Stony Stratford - Misanthrope Girl
A day in Stony Stratford - Devil's Kitchen
Is there honour amongst thieves? - Frank Davis
Stony Stratford, the sequel - Filthy Engineer
... and there are a collection of posters at Lawson Narse's place.

The speakers so far confirmed are as below (others may follow):
Bill Etheridge - Midlands representative for The Freedom Association
David O'Dell - Head of Stony Stratford Chamber of Commerce
Patrick Hayes - Journalist at the Institute of Ideas and columnist at Spiked
Nigel Farage - Leader of UKIP

So if you fancy satnding up for civil rights this Saturday in Stony Stratford, pop along and give the smokers your support.
First they came for the Smokers, next they came for the drinkers. The health Nazis are out there - time to start hitting back now!
