Alcohol sales are in decline, but still our politicians and their publicly-funded fake charities churn out their same old lies about binge drink epidemics that get turned into headlines in the Daily Mail by lazy hacks who can't be bothered to look at the evidence. So thanks to Straight Statistics for the above graph which shows a decline in binge drinking. Where, might you ask does such a graph originate from? The House of Commons library where it forms part of a larger study available as a pdf here.

Fake Charity wants to ban beer advertising
Another day and another drinks-industry bashing report from fake charity Alcohol Concern Cymru.
"A new report from Alcohol Concern Cymru shows that children as young as 10 in Wales are more familiar with some leading alcohol brands and adverts than those for popular foods and snacks".
Well good, it shows that children are observant about everyday life and are familiar with a normal part of that life, ie, drinking alcoholic drinks. Oh but the fake charity Alcohol Concern Cymru who are funded by the taxpayer (£250.000 in 2009/10) don't see it that way, reading between the lines it is clear they want a ban on the advertising of alcoholic drinks "Won't someone think of the children" is their cry and the idiots in the Welsh Government who fund these prohibitionists are likely to give in to their demands.
Mark Leyshon from Alcohol Concern said:
“It’s clear that more effective controls are needed to ensure alcohol marketing messages only reach adult audiences, and are not attractive to children. We need to look at the best practice from other countries that are seeking to tackle alcohol harm, and produce a regulatory framework that’s fit for purpose.”
No Mark, you and your organisation need to lose your charitable status and state-funding. The BBC refers to Alcohol Concern Cymru as 'A health campaign group', they are nothing of the sort, these are the neo-prohibitionists for the twenty-first century. They won't be satisfied until thousands of jobs are lost by the excellent drinks sector we have in Wales.
France already bans alcohol advertising, something that caused much amusement when, a few years ago Brains were sponsoring the Welsh rugby team and had 'Brawn' and 'Try Essai' printed on the shirts.
The full report is available to download here as a pdf. Read it to see where the idiots in the Cardiff Bay waste taxpayers money.

Alcohol Units - the truth
With the festive season over for another year the Nanny State and fake charities have been doing the rounds of television studios, telling us how much we should drink and how to run our lives.
The units system of alcohol is made up nonsense - check out QI on You Tube below:
The units system of alcohol is made up nonsense - check out QI on You Tube below:
In Britain, 21 units of alcohol per week is the recommended allowance, but in Poland it is 12.5, in Canada 23.75, in the USA 24.5, in Denmark and South Africa 31.5 and in Australia 35. However, if you drink between 21-30 units, you belong to a group of people who have lowest mortality rate in Britain. You actually have to consume 63 units per week, or one bottle of wine a day, to have the same death risk as a teetotaller. The man who invented the system admitted the number was made up.

Its ban time again!
Over to the Daily Mail who have set themselves up to be used as the mouthpiece of fake charity Alcohol Concern.
'Alcohol companies accused of exploiting Facebook, Twitter and YouTube by 'targeting young people with drink campaigns'
So which alcohol companies are doing this?
Well none if you read the article, however the bansturbators and prohibitionists at fake charity Alcohol Concern are worried that kiddies may be attracted to drink via promotions on social media.
The charity Alcohol Concern claims drinks companies’ web pages ‘appeal to minors’ with games, competitions and videos of drink-fuelled parties.
It also criticised the use of online and ‘viral’ marketing. This is where a brand message from a company may be passed on by users of a network such as Twitter or through texting – and may eventually reach an under-age user.

Okay you can find just about anything you want online and I'm pretty sure these kids could have seen everything from the Anarchist's Cookbook to hard-core porn, yet the bansturbators want to prevent the legitimate use of the internet as an advertising tool by drinks companies.
An apologist for the fake charity Alcohol Concern is quoted as saying
'There’s a real danger of children and young people being exposed to alcohol marketing on such sites, particularly given that age verification mechanisms are largely ineffective'
The bansturbator is not mentioned but its probably Don Shenker or one of his acolytes. The problem is if you start banning alcohol on social media sites just because children may see it, where do you stop?
Banning pub signs and names over the doors in case the children may see it?
Banning alcohol from supermarket shelves in case a child may grasp it?
The problem is not with the advertising of alcohol but with fake charities such as Alcohol Concern and their bastard offspring Alcohol Concern Cymru being funded by the taxpayer to make attacks on an industry that is enjoyed by millions of people.

The righteous get together
In a match made in hell, a joint conference will be held this year by Fake Charities ASH Wales and Alcohol Concern Cymru. The neo-prohibitionists of the smoking and drinking world getting together for what must be a fun-filled couple of days of bansturbation fills me absolute delight.
The topics to be discussed include:
"How do we shift public perceptions and norms?"
"Should we consider managing the retail environment and product marketing as ways of combating tobacco and/or alcohol use?"
So do we expect fair and balanced views from these Government-funded Fake Charities? No, not really as submissions of abstracts from Tobacco or Alcohol Industries or their subsidiaries will not be accepted. Ah so the righteous will be one-sided with their talk of banning advertising and brewery-sponsored sports events. As has been said elsewhere the denormalisation of smoking became eveident before the ban was introduced. We are now seeing the same being done to the drinks industry despite the amount of money it generates for this country.
It's time the Government ceased to fund these Fake Charities who waste our money on schemes to demonise the smoker and drinker. All they wish to do is to attack on our personal liberties and choices for their own benefit not for ours.
First they banned the smokers
And I did not speak out because I was not a smoker
Next they came for the drinkers...........
On another point, National No Smoking Day 2011 is coming up on Wednesday 9th March. Now this is the one day of the year that I choose to smoke, in protest at the nanny state we have imposed on us. This year I have some King Edward Imperials, well the US economy could do with the trade, and also something rather large from Nicaragua. now it's just trying to find the right pub to have a smoke outside, last year the protest was at the Vulcan in Cardiff, still undecided on the venue for this year.

My favourite fake charity is at it again
Hat Tip to Curmudgeon for this beauty from Fake Charity Alcohol Concern Cymru, who are funded by us the taxpayer to the tune of £250,000 for 2009/10.
Alcohol Concern Cymru have released a briefing paper to "stimulate wider public debate" about alcohol sales at petrol stations and garages.
Pointing out the bloody obvious, neo-prohibitionist Andrew Misell from the fake charity Alcohol Concern Cymru says, "Petrol stations, by their very nature, are strongly associated with driving and attract significant trade from motorists”. No shit Sherlock, this guy must be a genius to make that connection and he wants to stop motorists buying drink, for instance, on their way home from work. Listen you sniveling public sector bansturbator, if I choose to buy a drink - I make that choice - not you or your friends in the Nanny State which you wish to become the Bully State. In the consultation paper, Fake Charity Alcohol Concern Cymru admit that the number of drink-driving accidents has substantially reduced over the last 20 years but still want to ban more outlets selling alcohol. Also they do not provide any data to make the connection between alcohol sales in garages and drink driving.

Welsh Assembly wastes money on fake charity
Fake charity Alcohol Concern have been splashing out on a new website with taxpayers money, this time from the Welsh Assembly who kindly gave them £250,000 last year to interfere in our lives.
The new bilingual campaign, entitled Drinkwise Wales features lots of interactive sections with the 'How Much Do You Drink' bit firmly on the front page. My answer is of course - "None of your bloody business you Nanny State Stasi employees so why don't you get the hell out of my life and stop trying to tell all of us how to run our lives". Unfortunately there is no section to put that in. Also only wine, lager, canned beer, whiskey and alcopops are mentioned on the page, leaving us real ale and cider drinkers alone. Come on now Alcohol Concern, if you are going to be preaching to the masses on how to run their lives, surely you need to be preaching to all of them?
Perhaps the worst bit of Nanny State pandering on this site is the reaction game at which you must be the farmer catching eggs from his chicken. No I'm not kidding and this pile of shit is payed for by us the taxpayer!
Nearly forgot to mention that this taxpayer-funded site is offering a competition to win £100 worth of Amazon vouchers. All you have to do is answer a few questions and give them your name, address and email address so that this fake charity can put you on their database. If you have the number on your personal ID drink entitlement card that would also be useful.
Anyway that's the Saturday rant over and I've not even read the Daily Mail yet, still if you want more on the puritanical neo-prohibitionists Alcohol Concern and their boss Don Shenker I suggest you head over to see Fido at the Don Shenker is a Chump site. NB the word 'chump' is used in the similar way that Peter the Pedarist used it earlier this year.

How journalism works - alcohol studies part 2
Following on from the post yesterday entitled 'How journalism works - alcohol studies' there is another pile of seasonal rubbish from the Neo-Prohibitionists today.
Step forward the Western Mail today who have swallowed the fake charity line hook line and sinker.
Here are some real facts courtesy of the Office of National Statistics and not made up by a fake charity such as Alcohol Concern.
Shamelessly stolen from the Devil's Kitchen
The graph below shows the percentage of men and women drinking more than their 21/14 unit weekly 'limit.
Clearly it shows people are drinking less, a fact borne out by falling alcohol sales in the industry.
Of course the neo-prohibitionists don't like this so they reinvented the 'unit' of alcohol
Since 2007, the Office of National Statistics has assumed larger glasses are being used and stronger alcohol is being consumed. They now assume that a glass of wine contains 2 units, rather than 1, as it did before. With beer, what used be counted as 1 unit is now counted as 1.5, what used to be 1.5 units is now assumed to be 2 units and what used to be 2.3 units (a large can) is now counted as 3 units.
The term 'unit' was made up anyway.
So according to the revised data, people are drinking more and of course this is the type of misinformation that the fake charities thrive on - they are dependent on their funding from the Government. They have to keep up the scare stories in order to have the Government continue funding them.
Also in the Western Mail article:
And it follows figures published earlier this week which show that the number of people admitted to Welsh hospitals with alcohol-related problems – including alcohol poisoning – has increased by 30% in the past five years.
Not surprising as changes to data collection — which now include secondary diagnoses, such as alcohol-related injuries — have contributed to the surge in cases.
Once again the data has been changed and manipulated in order to give a false impression.
The whole post on the Devil's Kitchen site is well worth reading.

How journalism works – alcohol studies

Photo nabbed from Constantly Furious
A media studies graduate sitting on the newsdesk gets email from either a Government Department or a fake charity with an alcohol-related scare story. The journalist then repeats this as fact without checking any of the figures quoted in the press release. Needs a quote so calls fake charity Alcohol Concern or other Government spokesperson to provide one. Story goes to sub-editor who chooses a picture from in stock, normally showing beer drinking/pint glass of beer etc. Press release is printed verbatim and reported as 'fact' by the news agency/broadcaster concerned.
Again this has happened today where the Government Chief Health Officer Liam "Do people hate me 'cos I'm ginger" Donaldson spouted his shite that was picked up and reported in full by the Government funded BBC and used a quote from Government-funded fake charity Alcohol Concern and one from Professor Ian Gilmore who Chairs the Government-funded fake charity the Alcohol Health Alliance. Can readers see a trend here?
The scare story today is headlined “Parents giving children alcohol 'fuels binge drinking'”
What the story fails to address is why is it in mainland Europe, where children are on the whole a lot better well-behaved in pubs and restaurants and where alcohol is available to these children at an earlier age, is there no under-age binge-drinking problem there?
The shite from Donaldson also goes on to say the “The idea of a watered-down wine for a child as a middle-class obsession.......across England 500,000 children between the ages of 11- to 15 years will have been drunk in the last four week”.
No attempt by the BBC is made to justify these figures, not even asking Donaldson where his evidence comes from. We have the Nanny State becoming the Bully State and the BBC is merely the mouthpiece of State, not questioning the validity of arguments or figures thrown at them by the Government.
Also a 'middle-class' problem? Surely the binge-drinking chavoffspring are the problem, hanging out around the City Centre and bus stops at night swigging super strength cider or cans of Special Brew?
Expect an advertising campaign in the New Year, paid for by the taxpayer of course and run to death on the BBC.
One piece of good news is that Sir Liam Donaldson is set to retire next year.
Rent-a-quote fake charities for hacks to lazy to investigate a story:
Alcohol Concern
Alcohol Health Alliance - an umbrella organisation for Fake Charities such as Alcohol Concern, Institute of Alcohol Studies, Alliance House Foundation (founded in 1853 as the UK Alliance for the Suppression of the Traffic in all Intoxicating Liquors) etc

Fake Charity Fails its own Survey!
Hat tip to both Obo and Mr Eugenides for this one
Fake Charity Alcohol Focus, the Tundra-based Government-funded equivalent of Alcohol Concern has an interesting survey on it's website.
The question it asks is:
At the time of posting 6403 people have voted and the percentages are Yes 4% and No 96%.
As the people have spoken surely the time has been reached where these fake charities have their Government funding withdrawn? This Nulieber social engineering is a waste of public money - a way to try and persuade us that we have to conform to their way of thinking - and they way they do this is to pay fake charities such as Alcohol Concern, Alcohol Focus and even have Alcohol Concern Wales now, to produce scare stories and made up statistics to frighten and brainwash the public into believing their propaganda.
It's also worth linking to the tribute site for the boss of Alcohol Concern here.
