Now & Then, the Uplands Tavern, Swansea

 

The Uplands Hotel, Swansea has expanded into a neighbouring building since this picture was taken in the 1950s when it was a pub owned by Evan Evans Bevan Vale of Neath Brewery. Now renamed the Uplands Tavern and owned by Greene King Brewery, the Tav, as its known as, has a connection to Dylan Thomas who drank there and in most other Swansea pubs.

Now and Then, Tower Hotel, Jersey Marine

 The Tower, Jersey Marine, Swansea has been given something of an extensive makeover since these photos were taken in what appears to be the 1970s. The former Rhymney Brewery pub is shown in it's Whitbread livery in the photos but today it's known as The Towers Hotel and Spa.

 The tower itself was built in the nineteenth century as a camera obscura and after lying derelict for years has been converted into the bridal suite for the hotel.

Mumbles Ale House

Whilst down the Mumbles the other day, we popped into the Mumbles Ale House, the newest addition to the Mumbles Mile and just a short walk off the main road. The pub opened last year in what was an art studio.

 Certainly it's one of the smallest micro-pubs I've been into but size does not matter here when you look at the range of real ales and ciders they have on sale.

 Although whether or not if it's the first micropub in Wales is debatable as the Waen-brewery owned Gravity Station opened in Cardiff earlier in the year. First micropub that's a freehouse in Wales to be more exact.

A visit to the Pilot in Mumbles

Popped into the CAMRA award-winning pub The Pilot in the Mumbles the other day to do some filming with Simon Martin



We got to review their Black Storm Stout with Richard the brewer


One of their beers I particularly enjoyed was Revolver which features the same recipe every time it is brewed with the only difference being a change in the hops used.

Swansea pub holds beer festival

If you are in the Swansea area and fancy a few pints of real ale the weekend before things kick off at the Brangwyn Hall, then head out to Mumbles Road where the seafront hostelry the West Cross Inn is holding a festival between Friday 19th and Sunday 21st August 2011

The Wig, Swansea

Sometimes it is good to have a break from a beer festival and luckily just by the Brangwyn Hall is a Good Beer Guide Pub, the Wig. Serving 5 real ales, including Cottage HMS Ajax earlier this week and Timothy Taylor Landlord today, the Wig is well worth poping into for a pint or 2 or for something to eat. Outside veranda for those who wish to smoke as well. 2 pool tables inside and a spacious interior make this a pub with room for everyone, from the real ale drinker to the diner, to the chavs on a night out (thankfully relugated to a corner of the pub).
